HK Online Trade Seminar Series – “Aggregate, Regional and Sectoral Implications of Transportation Costs” by Prof. Kerem Coşar

We study the implications of falling transport costs on the US economy. We construct a multisectoral and multiregional model with input-output and investment linkages, and which features an explicit transportation sector. The model, which we calibrate on the U.S. input-output, employment and interregional shipment data, shows that the increase in transportation productivity observed in the US over the period 1947-2012 raised welfare by 9%. We study which regions and sectors were disproportionately impacted by these changes and we contrast our findings with the predictions of a model without an explicit transportation sector.
This is a joint seminar organized by HKU, CUHK, City U, HKUST and Lingnan U.
