Quantitative and Qualitative Changes in the Archaeological Study of Early China
Quantitative and Qualitative Changes in the Archaeological Study of Early China
What are the major qualitative changes that marked the key thresholds in the emergence of early Chinese civilization? What are the sociocultural trends in the archaeological records that could be measured through quantitative analysis? Using multiple case studies from Late Neolithic and Bronze Age China, Min Li of the University of California, Los Angeles, explores the major qualitative and quantitative changes in the archaeological record of Early China. During this Quantitative History Webinar, Min will identify the critical contribution of quantitative analysis in the holistic study of early Chinese civilization, particularly in the study of the shifting political landscape, expanding interactions, intensifying production, increasing urbanization, and consolidating social hierarchies, while technological innovation, religious development, political centralization, and cultural elaboration are deeply entangled in the building of early states.
