HKU Business School and Institute of China Economy (ICE) organised the 2^nd HKU Quarterly Forum on Chinese Economy on 26 April 2024. The forum featured Professor Zhenhua Mao, Founder of ZhongChengXin (HK) Investment Services Limited, and Professor of Practice of HKU Business School as the keynote speaker and presented the theme report titled “Current Trends in the Chinese Economy and Policy Adjustments”. Professor Heiwai Tang, Associate Dean (External Relations) of HKU Business School, Victor and William Fung Professor in Economics and Associate Director of Hong Kong Institute of Economics and Business Strategy also shared his insights on challenges and opportunities for the Chinese Economy in the era of new globalisation. Following the keynote speeches, Professor Hongbin Cai, Dean and Chair of Economics of HKU Business School discussed hot topics in the Chinese Economy with other scholars and industry experts during the roundtable discussion. The forum, co-organised with the Hong Kong Nankai Alumni Association and held at HKU iCube, was attended by a diverse audience of business leaders, academics, alumni and students, receiving about two hundred attendees.

HKU Business School’s first-ever Alumni Gala Dinner concluded successfully on 16 March, with over 600 alumni and faculty members gathered for this momentous occasion. We were honoured to have The Honourable Paul Chan Mo-po, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government, as the guest-of-honour and keynote speaker, along with several distinguished leaders from the society. The dinner featured a variety of activities, including alumni performances, an auction, and a lucky draw, providing an opportunity for guests to relive their cherished student memories. We were delighted to have alumni Mr. Alex Fong, the former holder of 11 Hong Kong swimming records, as our guest speaker, sharing his journey in sports competitions and entertainment career.

The “Thought Leadership Conference Series: The Future of Hong Kong Economy”, organised by HKU Business School and co-organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Economics and Business Strategy, concluded successfully on 18 January. The conference gathers distinguished scholars, policymakers and business leaders to engage in knowledge exchange and explore policy directions and opportunities for economic development in various topics, including the global economic outlook, repositioning Hong Kong economy, uncovering economic opportunities for Hong Kong’s transformation, entrepreneurs’ perception on the future opportunities, ESG Development and talent cultivation. This year, the conference invited Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Memorial Prize laureate in Economic Sciences and Mr. Vincent Lo, Founder and Chairman of Shui On Group as keynote speakers.

HKU Business School today announced the “Hong Kong Economic Policy Green Paper 2024”. The Green Paper was prepared by HKU faculty members, researchers and other internationally renowned scholars, who have conducted in-depth policy analysis and proposed recommendations for various pressing issues in Hong Kong. Topics include the city’s future as an international financial centre, maintaining the linked exchange rate system, income inequality and wealth gap, the impact of ageing population in health spending, reducing public housing waiting time, talent retainment and attraction, commercialisation of intellectual property as well as strengthening Hong Kong’s position as an international aviation hub.
