Competition Commission and HKU Business School co-organise 2023 Competition Enforcers and Academics Summit
The Competition Commission (Commission) and HKU Business School are co-organising the second edition of the Competition Enforcers and Academics Summit (Summit) on 10-11 August 2023 to foster the exchange of ideas and experiences on competition issues in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as to provide opportunities for academic institutions and competition law enforcement agencies to strengthen their collaboration and partnership.
Building on the success of the inaugural summit in 2019, this year’s event brings together more than 100 leading scholars and senior enforcement officials from 12 Asia-Pacific economies to exchange their insights and experiences, with a focus on the latest developments in competition law and policy in the region. A wide range of topical competition issues will be discussed in the seven sessions over the next two days, which include challenges arising from the digital economy, the interplay between competition law and environmental sustainability, enforcement regarding resale price maintenance arrangements, and the use of data screening for investigations. Officiating at the opening ceremony today, Mr. Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, said that under the “One Country, Two Systems”, Hong Kong has the distinctive advantages of enjoying strong support of the Motherland and being closely connected to the world. He is pleased that the Commission is leveraging Hong Kong’s distinctive advantages in bringing together experts and scholars from both the Mainland and overseas to harness their objectivity, wisdom and creativity, fostering exchanges for betterment in the area of competition. The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau will continue to render full support to the Commission in further fostering collaboration with competition agencies in the Mainland and overseas.
Mr. Samuel Chan, Chairman of the Commission, said, “The Commission would like to extend a warm welcome to leading academics and enforcers from the Mainland and overseas who are joining the Summit. Our objective in co-organising the Summit with HKU Business School is threefold: to gain insights into the experiences of competition enforcers across the region; to leverage the expertise of renowned academics; and to strengthen relationships among our peer enforcers. Through fostering cross-border exchange and collaboration, the Commission aims to enhance its role in bolstering competition enforcement and contributing towards formulation of competition policy in the region.”
