Evergrande chair’s wealth under scrutiny as developer faces default

Striding into the ballroom of one of his company’s hotels, glad-handing football stars and pouring champagne into a tower of flutes, Evergrande boss Hui Ka Yan was riding high. It was 2015, and former Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari had just guided Hui’s football team, Guangzhou Evergrande, to victory in Asia’s Champions League. Also in the ballroom were team co-owner Chinese tech billionaire Jack Ma and Britain’s Prince Andrew.

最近美国国会有几项引人瞩目的法案亟待审核，均涉及美国政府的财政。其一是有关社会安全网及应对气候变化、建议总额达3.5万亿元（美元·下同）的法案，这里简称社安法案。其二是总额达一万亿元的基础建设投资方案，这里简称基建方案。两者均由民主党提出。由于资金庞大，有论者将这两个法案与三十年代罗斯福总统的「新政」和六十年代詹森总统的「伟大社会项目」相比。若成功通过及实施，将被视为现届拜登政府的主要政绩。

Within Hui's real estate empire lies a lesser-known subsidiary — an assortment of amusement parks aimed at promoting Chinese culture by using next-gen tech.

The APEC Studies Programme of the Hong Kong Institute of Economics and Business Strategy at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) released its quarterly Hong Kong Macroeconomic Forecast. Hong Kong’s real GDP is estimated to grow by 6.9% YoY in 21Q3, slightly slower than the 7.6% growth in 21Q2.

In 2020, real estate giant Evergrande outlined a bold plan for itself — it was going to conquer Tesla. The property developer unveiled six electric car models, ranging from sedans to minivans to SUVs. It boasted that its cars would have "cockpits" that rival aerospace vehicles and would use a new smart operating system integrated into drivers' homes. Reports emerged of its vehicles being able to withstand extreme hot and cold temperatures, exciting investors.
